The Royal Lahaina Resort

Though the lobby—accented in dark wood with mirrored columns and a Maui mural covering the walls behind the front desk—hums with activity as guests from all over the world arrive and depart, tranquility holds sway throughout the rest of the resort's 27 acres. Casual and informal, the Royal Lahaina maintains its long reputation as a low-key sanctuary of relaxation.

The nightly oceanfront luau is a must for guests, and visitors from all over Maui come too. The tennis ranch is world-class. Gardens, graced by fragrant plumeria trees, provide shade everywhere. Ample lawns offer semi-private sunbathing on lounge chairs. The beach is just a few steps down from the resort's grounds. Dancing to live musical entertainment breaks out on the pool deck in front of the Royal Ocean Terrace restaurant during dinner. Oceanside massage is available under a thatched roof by the pool.

The Royal Lahaina is adjacent to two championship golf courses; the resort itself boasts two oceanfront pools and a beach activity center for complimentary daily scuba lessons. Guests enjoy convenient access and transportation to Lahaina Town, a 15-minute drive away.

520-room resort gives guests brass keys and other reminders of its storied history. Green and white bedspreads reproduce a Hawaiian quilt pattern. Furniture is light-colored and includes big wicker chairs with floral cushions. Bedside lamps have white bases carved like oversized pineapples. Reading-friendly floor lamps and potted plant. All rooms include air conditioning, refrigerator, and cable TV.

Snorkel sets, boogie boards, aqua eyes (boogie boards with an inset face mask), scuba gear, kayaks, and inflated rafts can be rented on Kaanapali Beach.

Royal Ocean Terrace - Wicker furniture, ceiling fans, and skylights create a gracious, island-style setting for selecting from a dinner menu that specializes in local seafood. A band plays nightly.

The Royal Scoop - This popular spot serves pastries and coffee in the mornings and pizza, sandwiches, and ice cream until well after dark.

Made in the Shade - Next to the main pool, this is where light fare is prepared for guests sunning by the pool and on the beach.
